A Polish view on Hungarian issues with democratic rights
In view of controversies surrounding democratic rights in Hungary, we talk to Bartłomiej Zdaniuk of Warsaw University about the future of democracy and the new Hugarian constitution.
According to many Western media, democracy is under threat in Budapest. In Poland, the leftist opposition and the Helsinki Human Rights Foundation have appealed to the Prime Minister to express solidarity with the Hungarian opposition claiming that Hungary violates basic democratic standards of the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
According to Bartłomiej Zdaniuk of the Institute of Political Sciences at Warsaw University, with Hungary’s new constitution now in place, "probably the best way would be to dissolve the Parliament and call new general elections and see whether the constitution is accepted by the majority of the Hungarian people, but it is the Hungarian people who have to decide."
