Diplomatic Bag :: Ageing Europe in dire need of pension system reform
Pension systems in the EU member states need a reform - we look at solutions proposed by the European Commission to keep pension schemes safe.
Europe is ageing. Forecasts suggest that in forty years the working age population in the European Union will decrease by almost 50 million.
The rapidly changing demographic situation in Europe is a threat to member states' pension systems as the proportion of labour workers to retired people will be seriously disturbed. While at the moment each pensioner in Europe is supported by four workers, by 2050 the number will fall to just two. As a result, a radical reform of pension systems is required.
Monika Greszta looks at reform plans in several European countries, including Poland, and looks at proposed changes to EU legislation.
