“This aid is directed toward those [Ukrainians] who will not have a sense of security at their holiday tables this Christmas,” said PM Kopacz.

“We're here to show you how much we solidarise with Ukrainians living in the east of the country, who are victims of the conflict,” she added.

The Prime Minister referred to a period following Poland’s introduction of martial law in 1981, when the country received aid from abroad.

“We know that this aid was not only material but also had a symbolic dimension. It was important to us that there were people in the West who remember that we count,” she said.

Kopacz explained that the aid convoy was possible thanks to a reserve from the state budget, which was launched on 28 November.

The convoy of fire trucks laden with aid will travel 1,250 km to Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine. (rg)
