The main problem of adoption in Poland is due to the excessive length of proceedings, including unregulated legal situation of children, the Supreme Audit Office (NIK) pointed out in a recent report.
The average time of the adoption procedure is two and a half years. If it is necessary to deprive the biological parents of custody, the procedure can take up to eight years.
According to the Ministry of Justice, there are approximately 70,000 children in children's homes and unrelated foster families, while the number of adopted children reaches about 3,000-3,500.
As many as 3,492 adoptions were reported last year, and for a decade, this number has remained unchanged.
“You have to ask yourself if it's wrong, that the number has not grown. Today, the state policy is to work with biological parents to restore children to them,” explained Izabella Ratyńska, director of the Office of Adoptive Families Foundation. (ps/rg)
