The yearly event is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and encourages individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday in March.
WWF spokesperson Paweł Średziński said that this year in Poland, Earth Hour took on a new dimension. The green organisation will dedicate this year's edition to porpoises.
Environmentalists indicate that this mammal, a cousin of the dolphin, which lives in the Baltic is critically endangered.
At the end of last year, the number of these mammals was estimated at 450 units. (rg)
