Birdwatchers will no longer have to rely on jotting down details with a pencil and notebook.
According to Katarzyna Groblewska of the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds, bird aficionados will now be able to process information faster, more accurately and more comfortably on their mobile or tablet.
Factors include information such as a bird’s gender, the season, viewing time and weather conditions.
The data can then be fed into Ornitho.pl, a new national platform for ornithological research.
If a user adds a bird species or watching time to the website a special program will store not only those but a lot of other features relevant to the subsequent analysis of the data.
The information collected by volunteers in the online database is set to be a valuable source of scientific study.
The number of amateur birdwatchers in Poland in on the rise, taking in several thousand people, reckons Tomasz Chodkiewicz, coordinator of the Poland’s Bird Monitoring project. (mo/nh)
