The Council of Europe is a convention-based human rights organisation that recently introduced a convention to counter all forms of violence against women, from stalking to rape. It is open to countries worldwide, not just in Europe.

“Domestic violence is an issue that is constantly in the news and we welcome Poland for having come on board as a state party to our convention, which will help to curb violence against women and domestic violence,” said Panos Kakaviatos, media Officer and spokesperson for the Council of Europe.

Poland ratified the convention on 27 April, joining 17 other signatories (Albania, Andorra, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey). 20 others have signed. (jh)
