Sławomir B. [surname withheld under Polish privacy laws] was serving a life sentence for murder at the time of the incident.
He has claimed that he was defending himself after being allegedly attacked by his 56-year-old cellmate.
Following last week's clash, the 56-year-old was taken to hospital, but he did not recover, and he died at the facility.
Initial findings suggest that he was strangled by Sławomir B.
The victim was serving a sentence of two-and-a-half years for domestic abuse.
“If it transpires during the investigation that there were shortcomings in the Prison Service at the prison in Czarne, this will become the subject of a separate investigation,” commented Jacek Korycki, spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office in Słupsk. (nh/pk)
