The majority of the accidents involved ordinary tourists and holidaymakers, with only ten occurring during climbing expeditions in the High Tatras. A helicopter was used in 61 rescue missions.
According to estimates by the Tatra National Park, almost one million people visited the southern Tatra region during the summer months.
There are 275 kilometres of marked trails in the Polish part of the Tatra mountain range, from very easy to extremely difficult.
