Talks are currently being conducted with three potential partners, a defence ministry representative said on Wednesday.

Beata Perkowska, the deputy head of the Operational Centre within the defence ministry, said that the present government will spend a fifth of total defense spending on modernising the army, including purchasing new weapons and equipment.

“In previous years, this commitment was not met,” Perkowska said.

She added that the previous government coalition in Poland “made yearly adjustments to the budget in order to justify the impossibility of equipping the Polish army with modern weapons.”

Earlier this month, Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz told parliament that the first of a batch of new helicopters for the Polish army would be delivered in 2018. (rg)
