One in ten Poles will be aged 80 or older by 2050, a demography professor at the University of Łódź, in central Poland, has said.

The demographer, professor Piotr Szukalski, said there are currently 1.6 million “very old” people living in Poland, eight times more than in 1950 when there were 180,000 people aged 80+.
Szukalski said that migrations of younger Poles, a slump in the birth rate, and forecasted lower mortality rates would see the population age further, especially with baby boomers set to enter into their 80s in some ten to 15 years.
He added that there will be a need to offer services both to enable increasingly dependent elderly to stay home and to offer round-the-clock, institutional care, as in the future, the current model of family-based care will change. (vb)
