The paramedics want a rise of PLN 1,600 (EUR 380, USD 425) gross a month over two years.

The health ministry has proposed half that amount: an increase of PLN 400 a month from July.

Paramedics have said that for two weeks their protest will involve putting up posters at their place of work but after that will take on another form.

Dariusz Mądraszewski, head of the paramedics section of the Solidarity trade union, said that the protest would not affect the provision of services to patients. Paramedics want to draw attention to the gap between their wages and those of nurses.

Deputy Health Minister Marek Tombarkiewicz underlined that paramedics would receive a pay hike in July.
