17 deputy ministers gone as PM reforms gov't

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Monday he has accepted the resignations of 12 deputy ministers, after last week promising to slim down the number of government ministers and their deputies by up to a quarter.

Five people earlier submitted their resignations, taking the total number of closed deputy-ministerial roles to 17.
Morawiecki said that the changes “largely” aimed to make government operations more efficient and that they were not “personal”.
On Twitter the Polish prime minister said the move was modelled on “the biggest Western democracies”.
He added that more positions would be cut within the next two weeks.
He earlier said at least 20 deputy ministerial positions would be closed.
Morawiecki on Monday also pledged to cut bonuses and rewards for ministers and their deputies, decrease the number of posts in government offices and reduce the number of government credit cards circulating in his administration. (vb/pk)
