Mystery donor leaves bagful of cash at Polish hospice

Police in Poland are investigating after a shopping bag full of money was found left in a hospice in the north of the country, according to reports.

The bag, which was found under a table at the Hospice of Divine Mercy in the town of Słupsk, contained over PLN 100,000 (roughly EUR 24,000, USD 29,500) in cash, in addition to EUR 2,000 worth of euro notes, broadcaster TVN 24 has reported.
The hospice nurse who discovered the cash on Tuesday also found a Bible lying on the table in the hallway, TVN 24 said.
The broadcaster quoted a lawyer, Prof. Wojciech Cieślak, as saying that anonymous donations are rare and that it cannot be ruled out that the money originated from a crime.
Under Polish law, the finder gets to keep an item found if the owner is not identified or if they do not come forward to collect their property, TVN 24 said on its website.
It cited Cieślak as explaining that this is precisely what should happen with the Słupsk windfall if the owner of the cash does not appear. But “it should be remembered that it will not be the hospice, but the nurse who found the money” who will get to keep the money, he said, as quoted on the tvn24.pl website.
Naturally, “if she so chooses, the nurse will be able to donate the money to benefit the hospice,” he added.
