Marek Kuchciński, Speaker of the Sejm, the lower chamber of Poland’s bicameral legislature, was speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, where an exhibition marking the 550th anniversary of the Polish parliamentary system opened on Wednesday.
Poland is "one of the oldest homelands of parliamentarism in Europe," Kuchciński said, as quoted by public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.
The exhibition features 11 boards that highlight the development of Poland’s parliamentary system from the 15th to the 18th centuries, the news agency reported.
A special joint session of both houses of Poland's parliament was held in Warsaw in July to mark 550 years since the country decided to set up a parliament.
