The country’s chief flu expert, Prof. Lidia Brydak, was cited as saying on Wednesday that the flu season was gaining momentum and likely to peak sometime over the next three months.

“The peak is still ahead of us, but no one can possibly predict when it arrives: at the end of January, the beginning of February or the end of March," Brydak said, as quoted by public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.

Last flu season, more than 5.3 million people fell ill with influenza and similar viruses in Poland.

Only some 3 percent of the population decides to have vaccinations against influenza every year, according to the IAR news agency.

Experts say that flu jabs are the most effective way of avoiding influenza.

Doctors warn that the flu can cause a range of serious complications.
