As the summer heat is giving way to autumn temperatures, we take a look at the aftermath of Poland’s biggest droughts in years and reasons behind it.

This past summer Poland has seen the greatest droughts in years. Losses are now estimated at 1 million hectares of crops. The harvest this year is expected to be some 15 percent lower than in the previous year. However, consumers are assured that this would not take a toll on their finances as prices at supermarkets and local shops would not be affected.

Does this mean that the droughts are just a blip on the radar or is it something to be concerned about?

Climatologists, however, warn the droughts are an issue that should be addressed as a long-term threat.

“We need to change our policy related to energy production, agriculture, water management, Andrzej Kassenberg, founder of the Institute of Sustainable Development, told Q&A host Alicja Baczyńska.

“There’s a lot [of work] ahead of us, as we’re not really prepared to deal with the droughts, alongside other extreme weather phenomena.”
